Proper bowling ball fitting is one of the most important—and sometimes overlooked—parts of getting consistent performance from your equipment. At Bowling Medic Pro Shop in Plano, owner Bill Fong takes a meticulous approach because every bowler's hand and release are different.

A proper fit helps you release the ball consistently

The bowling ball is the connection between your hand and the lane. If the span is too long or too short, the thumb hole does not fit correctly, or the finger sizes and pitches are not appropriate for your hand, your body may subconsciously compensate during the swing and release.

A properly fitted ball should allow you to hold and swing the ball securely without feeling as though you have to squeeze it. Reducing unnecessary grip pressure can make it easier to repeat your release from shot to shot.

Thumb fit is especially important

The thumb has to perform two seemingly opposite jobs: securely control the ball during the swing and then exit cleanly during the release.

A thumb hole that is too loose can encourage squeezing. A fit that is too tight or improperly shaped can interfere with a clean exit. Thumb shape also varies considerably from bowler to bowler, which is why simply measuring diameter is not always enough.

What a fitter is looking for: secure feel without excessive squeezing, a clean thumb exit, appropriate span, comfortable finger fit and pitches that work together with the bowler's hand.

Span and pitch matter

Proper fit involves considerably more than choosing the right hole sizes. Span determines the distance between the thumb and finger holes. An inappropriate span can create unnecessary tension in the hand.

Pitch determines the direction in which each hole is drilled into the bowling ball. Small pitch changes can substantially change how a ball feels and how easily the fingers and thumb exit. These measurements should work together as a complete fitting system.

Good fit can improve comfort

Bowling involves repeating the same motion many times during a league night, tournament or practice session. An uncomfortable fit can place unnecessary stress on the fingers, thumb, hand or wrist.

No bowling-ball fit can guarantee that a bowler will never experience discomfort or injury, but equipment should not unnecessarily fight the natural shape and movement of the hand. If something consistently hurts, feels awkward or forces you to squeeze the ball, it is worth having the fit evaluated.

Your fit can change over time

A drilling that worked well years ago is not necessarily the best fit today. Hands change. Flexibility changes. Previous injuries can affect how comfortably the hand opens. A bowler's release can also change as the game develops.

Existing measurements are useful information, but the bowler's current hand and current feel matter too.

Fit and ball performance work together

Bowlers understandably spend a lot of time thinking about coverstocks, symmetrical versus asymmetrical cores, surface preparation, layouts and lane conditions. Those things matter—but the bowler still has to deliver the ball.

A ball that matches the lane beautifully is not particularly useful if the bowler cannot release it consistently because the fit encourages squeezing or produces an inconsistent thumb exit.
